Deinstitutionalisation and Quality Alternative Care – Lessons learned and the way forward

Children without parental care continue to be placed in institutional care across Europe – environments that are utterly inappropriate for their emotional, physical, intellectual and social development. Much progress has been made in recent decades and several EU countries have taken steps to dismantle their institutional care systems. However, institutional care for children is still a reality in many member states, pre-accession countries and neighbouring countries. Much more must be done to end institutional care in Europe once and for all.
