The Roots Research Center (Greece) and Opening Doors for Europe’s Children call on the newly appointed Government in Greece to end institutional care and accelerate progress on child protection reform (Η Ελληνική έκδοση παρακάτω).
Children are suffering in Greece. The new government wants to stop rising levels of child poverty. We are pleased to this commitment, but we call on the Greek Government not to lose sight of the needs of the most vulnerable in our societies.
There are too many children growing up in Greece separated from their biological families.
Families and local communities are struggling, lacking support and adequate services.
In Greece, many of those vulnerable families with children go unpaid or have had their jobs cut due to austerity measures. Poverty and deprivation can heighten the risk of violence and child abandonment.
When a child goes into care in Greece, more often than not they end up in institutional care. Often they stay there for the rest of their childhood. Other family-like alternatives such as foster care are poorly developed in Greece, lagging behind almost every country in Europe.
Guidelines exist from the UN and from the EU. They should be used to make children’s rights a reality in Greece. The Roots Research Center – Opening Doors Coordinator in Greece – has been collaborating over the last 2 years with the Ministries of Welfare and Justice, on new legislation for children in institutions. Let’s not lose this momentum.
There are alternatives to institutional care. The most cost-effective solution is investing in an integrated child protection system that supports families in the local communities and offers individualised care for children. This means, for example, providing family and parenting support, community healthcare, quality education and training foster care professionals. The EU has made funding available for this purpose.
A good childhood is essential for a good society. Let’s invest where it matters most.

Δώστε προτεραιότητα στην μεταρρύθμιση της Παιδικής προστασίας!
Στην Ελλάδα τα παιδιά δυστυχούν.
Η νέα Κυβέρνηση θέλει να σταματήσει την αύξηση της Παιδικής φτώχειας.
Χαιρόμαστε με αυτή τη δέσμευση, αλλά ζητάμε να μην παραλείψετε τις ανάγκες των πιο ευάλωτων παιδιών της κοινωνίας μας.
Είναι πολλά τα παιδιά στην Ελλάδα που ζουν μακριά από τις οικογένειές τους.
Οι οικογένειες και κατά τόπους ευάλωτες κοινωνικές ομάδες μετά βίας επιβιώνουν από έλλειψη στήριξης υπηρεσιών. Στη χώρα μας πολλές από τις ευάλωτες οικογένειες με παιδιά είναι απλήρωτοι ή άνεργοι λόγω των μέτρων λιτότητας.
Η φτώχεια και η στέρηση αυξάνουν τον κίνδυνο βίας και εγκατάλειψης.
Το παιδί σε ανάγκη ή κίνδυνο, καταλήγει πάντα σε ιδρυματική φροντίδα. Συχνά μένει εκεί για την υπόλοιπη παιδική του ηλικία.
Άλλες εναλλακτικές μορφές φροντίδας όπως η Αναδοχή δεν έχουν αναπτυχθεί επαρκώς στην Ελλάδα, παραμένοντας πίσω από κάθε άλλη χώρα της Ευρώπης.
Υπάρχουν κατευθυντήριες οδηγίες από τα Ηνωμένα Έθνη και την ΕE. Πρέπει να τις χρησιμοποιήσουμε για κάνουμε τα Δικαιώματα του Παιδιού πραγματικότητα.
Το Κέντρο Ερευνών Ρίζες– εθνικός συντονιστής του καμπάνιας « Ανοίγουμε δρόμους στα παιδιά της Ευρώπης»– τα δύο τελευταία χρόνια έχει πάρει μέρος σε συνεργασίες διαλόγου με τα υπουργεία Δικαιοσύνης και Πρόνοιας, με σκοπό την ψήφιση νέας νομοθεσίας για τα παιδιά των Ιδρυμάτων. Μην παραβλέψετε την κατάκτηση αυτή.
Υπάρχουν εναλλακτικές της ιδρυματικής φροντίδας. Η πιο συμφέρουσα λύση είναι η επένδυση σε αναβαθμισμένο σύστημα προστασίας που θα στηρίζει οικογένειες στην τοπική τους κοινωνία και θα προσφέρει εξατομικευμένες υπηρεσίες στα παιδιά. Αυτό σημαίνει για παράδειγμα, στήριξη γονέων, κοινοτική φροντίδα υγείας, εκπαίδευσης, εκπαίδευση ειδικών για την Αναδοχή. Η ΕΕ έχει διαθέσιμους πόρους για το σκοπό αυτό.
Η ποιοτική παιδική ηλικία είναι καθοριστική για μια καλή κοινωνία.
