Our contribution to EDF’s alternative report on the rights of persons with disabilities

Last week, the European Disability Forum (EDF) launched its Alternative Report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities (UN CRPD) in Europe.

The report monitors the EU’s compliance with its obligations under the UNCRPD and it is a key asset in observing the respect of the rights of children with disabilities who are hugely overrepresented in institutional care.

By contributing to the report the Opening Doors Campaign gave inputs to the UN Committee of the situation on the ground, which will hopefully lead to additional questions on deinstitutionalisation of children with disabilities in the EU, and help improve their situation and end institutional care in Europe.

The Alternative Report is part of the review process of the EU by the UN Committee in Geneva, which will, during its 13th session on 2 April 2015, examine for the first time the report that the EU has submitted describing the work it has done to secure the rights of people with disabilities.
